Abstract

Oxalis debilis Humb., Bonpl. et Kunth, a species native to tropical South America, was found on 77 localities in the Czech and Slovak Republics. This noxious weed occurs mostly in garden centres, in glasshouses and hotbeds, rarely in other habitats. It was first recorded in Praha-Strašnice in 1978, and since 1986 it has been recorded rather frequently in the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, number of localities exist in the area between Bratislava and Košice. The distribution map is presented. In the glasshouses, the species has been usually established for many years, mainly in the cultures of ornamentals, especially Asparagus and Rhododendron simsii. In 39 localities it grows together with Oxalis latifolia. As its congener, the species is not hardy and does not reproduce by seed but bulbils so that its spread is exclusively with gardening plant material and soil or compost. In central Europe, O. debilis is probably not capable of naturalization due to climatic and biological limitations. Suggestions concerning the species management are presented.
