Abstract
A brief review is given, summarizing basic knowledge attained up lo now in study of chromosomes in Compositae. The extensive variation in chromosome numbers within the family is poinled out. The mechanism of changes in basic chromosome number, as well as the impact of polyploidy on speciation is discussed. The phenomenon of karyotype asymmetry is emphasized, in connection with evolution of specialized taxa occupying unstable habitats. Mcthods of molecular gene ti cs (isozyme analysis, DNA analysis) are essential tools to verify preceding hypotheses aboul phylogcny in Compositae, often based on karyological dala . Examples of such sludies in Compositae, complementing karyological and biochemical methods one another, are given from lhe recent literature.
