Abstract
Living Selaginellaceae are represented by three morphologically quite distinct groups formed by derivates of three phylogenetic lines (two of them were already noted in the Upper Carboniferous period). These groups are being recognized here as distinct genera : Selaginella P. Beauv. s. str. (with sporophylls and leaves spirally arranged), Lycopodiodes Boehm. in Ludw. (sporophylls and leaves decussate) and Bryodesma Soják gen. novum (sporophylls decussate, leaves spirally arranged). Leaf heteromorphism (isophylly, anisophylly) has been generally considered so far the best criterion for major divisions within Selaginella s.l., but in fact it is not too important taxonomically. Thirty five new nomenclatural combinations are suggested for the genus Bryodesma.
